Remarks & Notes
”There’s Something You Don’t See Every Day, Chauncey.” “What’s That, Edgar?”

Saturday, April 15, 2017, was a bad day on the San Diego Subdivision. About halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, a train reported possible condemnable flat spot thus causing potential damage to the rail. As a result, cab car 6953 was set out in San Juan Capistrano. A 10 MPH restriction was placed on all trains until the track could be inspected between San Diego and San Juan Capistrano. After it was discovered shelling was the cause, car 6953 was picked up and sent to LA in a deadhead move. At 4:35, this deadhead train passed through Commerce on its way back to the Amtrak yard at Redondo Junction, near downtown Los Angeles. Cab car 6953 (the “Point Conception”) leads the train, and is followed by F59PHI 452, five coaches and another F59PHI (number 460). This train picked up cars, but not passengers, as it passed through all the stations without stopping on its way to the yard. (Unfamiliar with "shelling"? Click HERE.

Cab cars are special built coaches that are heavier than normal and have a cab for push/pull operations. This also includes NPCUs, but not road slugs.
