Less than 12 hours after this photo was taken, these ancient Southern Railway signals and lattice-style cantilever bridge would guide their final train through Norfolk Southern's Charlotte District. These old signals have long been some of my favorite to shoot, and when I received news over the weekend that they would be retired on the morning of Monday, May 22nd, I knew I had to get out Sunday night and get my final shots of these historical relics. Unfortunately, mother nature decided that she didn't want to comply, and tried to dump as much rain as she could while I shot the signals. It was a pain to hold an umbrella over my gear while trying to manually focus the camera, not to mention that I ended up soaking wet- but, it was more than worth it in my opinion. I'm glad I was able to get the shots that I did, and I'll always remember each and every shot I took at these signals. For those interested, southbound general merchandise freight 191 is lined on track two (double red, left set of signals) and northbound empty Wateree coal train 789 is lined on track one (high green, right).
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
