Amid a railroad landscape that is constantly changing with modernization's to infrastructure or the restructuring of how obscure railroads operate, there's only one constant guaranteed in Appalachia and that's — change. Here, on Norfolk Southern's Guyandotte River Branch connecting Mullens, W.Va., with Gilbert, W.Va., is a Virginian Railway searchlight signal. In this summer 2017 perspective, the signal is silhouetted against the rising milky way during a new moon.
