Remarks & Notes

Sunrise on the Rio Grande Southern. The "sunrise" herald of the Rio Grande Southern on Locomotive #455's tender stands out in the early morning light as she crosses a small wooden trestle right at sunrise. This scene was staged as part of a 3-day, Rio Grande Southern re-creation photo charter on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. The charter was organized by the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, and utilized a mix of historic D&RGW and RGS equipment, including K-27 Locomotive #463, disguised as RGS #455. The location seen here is actually Ferguson's Trestle (aka Hangman's Trestle) at MP 285.9. Although the sunrise was dimmed a bit due to atmospheric smoke from western wildfires, that sun still did a great job of illuminating the spaces between the timbers on the bridge deck. They almost look like they're on fire.
