Bridges over South Chickamauga. A Southern Railway Freight rumbles across the steel girder bridge over South Chickamauga Creek, headed Compass East toward the Grand Junction Yard, roughly a quarter mile ahead. The eastern section of Chattanooga is something of a railroad Mecca, with multiple lines in close proximity to each other and lots of activity. Here at South Chickamauga Creek, there are no fewer than 5 bridges within a stone's throw of each other, 3 of which carry railroad traffic, 1 carries highway traffic, and the remaining one appears to carry utilities. In this image, two active railroad bridges are visible on the right side, with the historic pilings of a 3rd visible on the lower left. The latter pilings likely date back well into the 1800s. At times, you'll see CSX, NS and TVRM activity all at once, running at different elevations, and you'll feel a bit like you're walking around in the middle of a giant model railroad.
