Thank goodness no one was hurt. I sure hope they catch the nut(s) responsible.

Why would someone do something like that? Is it supposed to be funny or amusing? I hope they get caught too. Either by the police or by Karma.

All that Powder River coal went to waist. But that's not what's important, they just ruined thousands of the railroad's dollars, and their consence.

The sad part is things like this can be used as justification for action against railfans, too bad very few railroads realize that we're the people that would report/move the ties on the tracks!

A few weeks ago a Coaster train here in SD struck a metal plate left on the tracks by vandals... one of those large steel bridgeplates used to cover a hole during construction on a road. While the results were (thankfully) nowhere near what happened in your photo, the train was still disabled causing grief for travellers on it (and the Amtrak behind it) and nothing could pass through until the tracks and train were repaired and the train removed. Fortunately it was late at night so both trains were almost empty, not much traffic was affected, and crews were able to fix it in time for the morning rush. you gotta think though, those people (could not have been just one) must have really been bored, I mean, it takes planning to get that metal plate, drag it to the site, and perch it on the rails (train was in a canyon, nowhere near roads). At least with Ties they're conveniently placed, and can be dragged by one person, so while I don't understand it I could see a bored person doing it.

I wouldnt be surprised if the vandals initials or nickname is spray painted on the signal box there, and for that matter he probably lives no farther then a ten minute walk from that site. I hope he and his buddies involved were caught.

We have problems here in Western New York with the Seneca Indians and the state over weather or not they should be taxed for the tabacco they sell. About 4-6 months ago some anti-state idiots who were on the Senecas side had the nerve to put ties on the CSX tracks near Silver Creek. The result was that the eastbound Lake Shore Limited ran into them. Thankfully no one was hurt and the train stayed on the tracks. In the course of the investigation a note saying "no sail, no rail" was found at the scene. While incident in this photo was clearly the result of morons looking for "a thrill" the picture(no pun intended) is crystal clear. When you do something this stupid you can lose the support of those int this world(as probably did happen in both cases) and you do a dang good job of screwing up your future. As for this incident for the sake of themselves and the public I hope these jerks either turned themselves in or already charged.

Reminds me of that passenger train derailment in New Mexico around 1995 where person (s) unknown removed part of a section of rail but replaced the wring in such a way the crew was unaware the section was missing, the train hit the spot at 79MPH and well you know the outcome,to date no one has been found or arrested , the FBI says the case is still open.
