Actaully, the full lash-up was A-B-A-B-B-A. The first two A-units were facing forward, and the third was facing backward.

It was the day after Christmas, when many Amtrak trains were longer than normal for the holidays. Plus, the old Fs were not all that powerful (especially by today's standards), and they were getting old and a bit unreliable as well.
