For those unfamiliar with CNJ cab units, the numberboards identify all the locomotives in the consist, thus the 56, 57 shown, with 56 being the lead unit. Boosters carried letters instead of numbers, so if a B-unit were also included, it's letter would appear in the blank space between the numerals. Though unique, the system is unable to handle more than a three-unit locomotive consist, unless it contains but one cab unit.
