The weekend closures of the #7-Flushing line is between Times Square, in Manhattan, and 74th St.-Roosevelt Ave. in Queens, and will last for several weeks. The little GE, and its work train, are among several such sets of equipment involved in track work, just east of Queensborough Plaza, which will result in the insertion a new double crossover, as well as modification of other existing tracks. The idea is to provide greater flexibilty in turning trains at the Plaza when delays in service occur. The track panels are assembled in the old Long Island Rail Road freight yard below Queens Blvd., (over which the Flushing elevated structure is located at this point) and are then lifted by crane up to the elevated structure for installation. The cranes in the background, however, are invloved in another rail project, one that will allow some LIRR trains to operate into Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. At this point, they are preparing the site to build a tunnel-boring machine, which will extend the 63rd St. Tunnel project beneath Amtrak's Sunnyside Yard, to an eventual connection with the LIRR main line in the vicinity of Harold Tower.
