Is there a lot of train traffic up near Spruce Pine? I've always been wanting to go train watching up there.

Andrew, while you're not by any means going to see traffic volume like you would on Cajon or at Horseshoe curve, CSX's old Clinchfield line sees a respectable number of trains for a single track mountain railroad. If I had to guess I'd say maybe 30 trains per 24 hrs. come through Spruce Pine, but I could be way off. (It's enough to make it worth a trip.) Most are coal trains with a few short mixed freights and an occasional intermodal. What it doesn't have in traffic volume it makes up for in remote mountain RR atmosphere (tunnels, scenery, etc.). Check out http://www.frograil.com/tours/csx/clinchfieldSouth.htm and that might help you out if you're not familiar with the area. Rainfanswelcome.com also has a map of the "loops" in their online database that is very helpful. I'd highly recommend checking out the line. Happy railfanning!
