Jackson model 6000 tamper. It raises the track to a uniform level and line using light. The small silver rectangular box on the end kinda sticking up in the air receives the light signals from the source which is positioned on a buggy (currently stored on the front of the machine). The light is shot from ahead of the machine, passes through a shadow board and then hits the receiver, and the machine automatically levels the track to a preset height. (The small section with the wheels in the air in the middle of the machine does that work) The work heads (blades located right ahead of the operator) then drop beneath the tie and compact the ballast so the track stays in place. While working, the entire process only requires the operator to push a button, and move the machine to the next tie. The person on the outside watches and makes adjustments as necessary to keep the track smooth and level (or superelevated on curves).
