Can someone explain why MMA Derby Shops are making these 20 year old units look as bad of shape as they look here. They look like their being scrapped, but MMA only scrapping so much then showing whats left to the railfans each to every other month. I don't understand how these are going to be used out on the Panama Canal Rwy. Aren't they only using some kind of FP40PH's or something right now?

When KCS took over PCRC, I think they were using five or six F40PH's and one GP10. I guess that with port terminal expansions complete on both ends of the Panama Canal for more Post-Panamamax container ships to dock, there's now more traffic to haul between both ports. I guess KCS figures that using freight units to haul this traffic is less arduous for the F40PH's. By the way, they still need to use the F40PH's on freights because some of this traffic involves refrigerated containers that run on the 480V AC that the F40PH"s HEP provides.
