Adding to the story, Ford in a fit of spite at NYC's refusal to permit a crossing with his railroad, built his overpass at absolute minimum clearance, so whenever NYC did any trackwork, they would have to remove old ballast so not to raise the track structure. When autoracks and stacks came around, NYC successors had to lower the track to permit clearance of the higher cars.
