BNSF 7950 is an SD45-2M formerly BNSF SD45-2 6485 (nee-ATSF SD45-2 5631). The 20-cyl prime mover has been replaced with a 16-cyl prime mover. In addition the SD45-2 rear hood radiator section has been replaced with a SD40-2 type radiator section. This is the first of a number of BNSF SD45-2s that will receive this modification.

Thanks for the info Ralph, I was going by the designation on the frame behind the front step.

The SD45-2 was made with vertical radiators.

Those still appear to be SD45-2 grilles on the rear hood as opposed to an SD40-2.

The grilles are the same, but the radiator fans on top are those of an SD40-2 - if you see it from the side, the fans are closer together and positioned towards the rear.

Nice shot Dan! Can you send a copy of that photo to Athearn and tell them we need a few of these in HO scale, I would buy a couple. They sure did a nice paint job, now if somebody at BNSF would put that engine on the lead of a Chicago bound pigtrain, that would be sweet to see in person.

A nice way to get rid of the fuel guzzlers, a.k.a. the SD45-2s, which have been known for guzzling fuel well back into the ATSF days.

Dan, thanx so much for sharing this shot. I love this loco model in this paint scheme. It looks very, very sharp. I'm gratified to know that BNSF will keep some of the 45-2s around, if only in "body". Bring em on, guys!
