Here is an example of an EMD locomotive built, without a hand brake, for the Atlantic Coast Line. Notice the lack of a recess in the side of the nose for the rachet-type brake, common to the model, like those built for the Seaboard Air Line and Union Pacific. What did ACL use to keep a locomotive from rolling away? That heavy chain, hanging from the frame, would simply be slung across the rail fore and aft of a wheel set! My question is this, what did ACL save by eliminating a safety feature that is, most likely, standard equipment?
