Coal and tunnels make a lot of grime. I think that it's kind of ironic that the pipe arches in Donald's photo are Clinchfield's one and only washing facility. The railroad did use it because they always provided clean passenger F-7s from Elkhorn City, Kentucky to Erwin, Tennessee. From Erwin, Tennessee to Spartenburg, South Carolina, Clinchfield provided their "ONE Spot" 1882 vintage steamer assisted by two F-7 boosters which were controlled from #1's cab. The #1 and the boosters along with the passenger train were always clean. The Clinchfield railfan trips were some of the best I ever went rode.

It took me a minute to figure out that was a washer. Since the weeds around it are not bigger or greener it probably was not used much, at least that year. Thanks Don again.
