I think that might be a M1

That is correct, the engine pictured is a M1b, 4-8-2.

With all due respect to the person that kindly posted this fine photograph and to those that have helped to identify the locomotive class pictured here, I offer these comments. This locomotive, PRR 6973 is a class M1 mountain type and not an M1a or the later modified M1b. All M1a and later M1b engines were equipped with steam pipes inside the cylinder saddle and a feedwater heater with a mixing tank that would have been visible directly behind the stack. Note that 6973 has outside steam pipes visible directly above the piston valves on the cylinders and does not have a feedwater heater. Class M1b would also have been equipped with circulators visible on the side sheets of the firebox that 6973 is without. Last but not least the 6973 was listed on the roster by the PRR as class M1.
