George, Is Sept 2008 REALLY the date of this photo? I recall these cars (or ones VERY SIMILAR) being in Brunswick when I lived there in the 1980s, then they "disappeared". As much as CSX has changed things it's amazing that the B&O markings still remain on the cars. Certainly agree that it would be excellent for them to be preserved, having survived this long. The cars along with the 'Big Hook' formed the Brunswick Wreck Train. At this point in time (1982) carriers were using off track contractors (Hulcher, Cranemasters etc.) for wreck clearance.
