While it's true the little pellets come whizzing by at a pretty good rate, what you're seeing there I believe is more a function of porosity in the rail. I'm betting it was a pretty old section of track. If that weren't the case, you'd expect to see the wheels in just as poor a condition. Still, interesting shot none the less.
