The dome was actually ordered by the Chesapeake & Ohio for its Chessie streamliner, that never launched. Many of the cars were sent to the Pere Marquette district, while others were sold, with some going as far as Argentina. The dome-observations, on the Rock Island were operated by Butterworth Tours, and then went to the Rio Grande, where they had diaphragms added to the round end for mid-train service on the Yampa Valley Mail. There were Chessie dome sleepers as well, intended for daytime use on C&O as that intended service was a day train. They went to the Baltimore & Ohio where they served as sleeper domes, often on the Capitol Limited. Later those cars operated on Seaboard Coast Line in Richmond-Florida service over the ACL route, before moving on to Amtrak. One of the preserved dome-observation has had its rear restored to its original appearance.
