I love the photo. It's a great view of spring in California. However, I believe the train is traveling south, as the ocean would be to the west...

You are correct. The ocean is to the west of the tracks, however, the locomotive is in "push" mode as evidenced by the rear marker lights being on instead of the headlights. I normally don't do going-away photos, but this was our last day in the area and we'd been trying for three days to get the "safe-surf" locomotive, so I'm forced to take what I can get.
