This picture is from the post-merger period, as it was the Norfolk & Western that modified the EL-Cs, with bus jumpers on the front end to allow such three-unit lash-ups. Only one EL-C ever got full N&W paint. Nevertheless, the 3300 h.p. EL-C fleet had a productive life, moving on the New Haven, Penn Central and finally Conrail.

It may just be hard to see in the photo, but I don't see any overhead catenary lines. Are they there or could these pick up from a third rail?
