I would assume that the block of wood with the green and white flags,in the foreground is the engineer's marker. That he uses to know where to stop his train.

This is a sister locomotive to 4070, the star of 'Silver Streak' along with 4067. While 4072 was used to pull 'The Halifax' 4070, 4067 were used to pull the historic 'Canadian'.
