I remember that tragic day. Two kids died in East Lansing walking GTW's tracks when they were both hit by a train. I was not too much older than they were at the time. Good photo.

The picture shows the danger of trying to beat the train. Sad ending the train always win.

Shanan, are you saying that this train hit two kids in EL and then just 30 miles later hit this car in Sunfield in the same afternoon? Wow.

Big fan of your pics. No, they were seperate trains but did happen on the same day. The two kids were on the tracks on or near the bridge over the Red Cedar. When the train approached they both seemed to be confused as to which direction it was coming from and couldn't get out of the way in time. The brother died instantly. His sister (Krista, which my mom knew from Wardcliff) died hours or days later. After the incident it seems the engineer is required to sound the horn every time he enters the area. Even to this day.

I know that bridge you're talking about. That's a very bad place to be unless you really know where you are and what you are doing. I haven't heard freights blow for that area often, but Amtrak does frequently.
