BETTENDORF, Iowa (Map, News) - Transportation safety officials say two crew members have died in a freight train crash in eastern Iowa. National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Keith Holloway says a Dakota Minnesota & Eastern Railroad freight train struck a group of cars in a rail yard around 2 a.m. Tuesday. He says the crash happened after the train crossed through a switch that was not wired for the main line. An NTSB advisory issued early Tuesday says two crew members were killed in the crash in Bettendorf. Holloway says eight cars and two locomotives were derailed in the accident

WOW. Where is the engine and the rest of the carbody? I don't even see any piece of the cab!

It looks like the anti-climber failed and everything on the lead locomotive was sheared off above the frame. RIP guys.

I don't think this unit had an anti-climber, as evident from other photos of it on the site.

For those of us not-so-railroad-literate... can you please explain what an anti-climber is? Never heard of it.

Those are CPR employees correct? It looks that way because they have red hard-hats and the CPR now own the DM&E.

Anti-climbers are pieces of metals on the frame (or part of the original frame for new engines) that prevent an oncoming car from riding up on top of the frame of a locomotive. The idea is to keep the locomotive on top of the wreck.

It's sad for the crew members and the people who loved them. At least, they died in «honor».

What a terrible sad, tragic accident. The poor families and friends. And some irony with the blooming purple flowers in the foreground.

This is very sad and tragic with the loss of railroad life for the DME/CPR. RIP Men & Women whom have passed away while on the job, and lets hope this does not happen again.

R.I.P brothers...With my heavy passion for trains, I would not want to die on one. That is one hell of a way to go that I hope I never experience.
