"Costume party?!" That was the expected/respected uniform! It was for their protection from cinders grease and oil and overall comfort that such clothing came about. In the '70' s steam crews started wearing the gosh-awful foam/mesh caps and T-shirts in the cab. Ughh! It was horrible! Nowadays, thank goodness, all the coal-fired steam crews wear the overalls and chore coats. (The oil-fired guys still like the T-shirts!)
