This may not be the proper forum for this, but I'd like the backstory on these units. They seem to have a lot of the characteristics of US F units. Are they built here? How close are they to,say,an F7?

The 'S' class were built in the late 1950s by Clyde Engineering, the Australian licensee of EMD. It was a local design using imported EMD components including the 16-567C engine, traction motors, main generator, etc. The nose is made from slightly narrowed (to fit the loading gauge) EMD F unit nose pressings. Their 'vital stats' are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_Railways_S_class_(diesel)
