Very unusual construction.

Excellent historical info Chase. I'm gonna bet the bricked in section is a coal seam, judging by the way the ceiling appears. Again, one heck of a story and pic. Thx.

Chase...

Great shots...many thanks for posting them. However, I feel I must correct your history notes. There's actually two separate lines involved here (that the CBC&S is purchasing).

The line that has the two tunnels runs from Blue Creek up to Morris Fork (it originally went on to Hitop), and was never owned by the Coal & Coke, or the B&O / Chessie. It was originally Kanawha & West Virginia, and ownership progressed down through the years to New York Central, Penn Central, Conrail, and finally Norfolk Southern.

The line that you're referring to as the Coal & Coke, B&O, etc., is the section between Blue Creek & Falling Rock, which is also part of the CBS&S's purchase. It was this section of trackage that Chessie sold to Conrail in the 1980's.

Both the Charleston to Falling Rock, and Blue Creek to Sanderson sections of these lines last saw service in 1991.
