I have always wanted to hear what these units sounded like when they were running. Born too late for that unfortunately. Darn the luck. Excellent catch for a photo.

I'm thinking that's just outside the freight house in Salt Lake City, John. I lived in SLC at the time, and my dad took me down to see these silent beasts in 1974 and 1975, and I climbed all around on them, snapped lots of black and white photos. That's the Grant Tower area just to the left, with the Provo subdivision mainline the tracks on the far left side of the frame.

Search for the video "Union Pacifics Mighty Turbines" on youtube. It gives an idea of what the sounded like and shows one of them starting up, which creates quite the interesting effect.
