This photo shows an up express (ie southbound) for Kings Cross leaving Hadley Wood South Tunnel in the early 1950s before the introduction of the later BR tender emblem and adoption of all maroon coaching stock. In fact the second carriage, a post war steel coach, appears to still be in the LNER ersatz teak livery. The photographer has his back to Greenwood signalbox that controlled the south end of the two-track bottle-neck from Potters Bar (later quadrupled) the lines becoming four tracks from this point south, the signal above the loco showing that it is continuing on the fast line and not being switched to the slow.
