Great shot Pat. I was shoving back to my yard on the east side of Cleveland when this train passed us, an interesting move to say the least.

According to a supervisor at work, NS bought these units and they are heading to Juniata for overhaul and paint... Recycling at its best!

Sorry, really dumb question, but why would NS buy old UP locomotives? surely they have loads in storage at the moment themselves? and even if they wanted more, would they not buy new ones that would have better fuel economy?

They may have purchased these SD60's for the SD40E rebuild program, or adding them to there own lease fleet of some sort. Great Shot!

NS has recently came into some big contracts for coal and they are hiring like crazy. I guess this is a quick way of getting some power without waiting or paying big bucks for new locos. With the poor economy it has become a crazy industry with BNSF and UP having over 3,000 folks not working on the west coast, and NS & CSX hiring on the east coast. Great photo you dont see everyday.
