The BBC in the UK did a Documentary on this Railroad about a month ago, I was surprised at just how much staff were stationed on the locomotive (5 men!), the two guys sitting over the buffers trickle sand onto the rails to increase traction..........................
Then the guy sitting on top of the boiler shovels coal to the cab for the fireman to stoke the fire. Labour costs in different countries lead to very variable conclusions.
