This train broke down in La Junta, CO and was towed by a freight locomotive to Albuquerque where it was swapped for an Amtrak unit, unfortunately the train lost additional time while powered by the freight engine and by the time it left Albuquerque, #3 was over 9 1/2 hours late and didn't reach Flagstaff until 6:35am, well after #4 made its Flagstaff stop. The train made up a little time in the desert, but when it reached Los Angeles at 5:10pm it was just under 9 hours late! A long and agonizing ordeal, but the amazing part of this event, was the fact that this trainset, probably with different locomotives was serviced and went out as #4 just over an hour after arriving! While these delays are never pleasant, the neat thing is you get see scenery during the day that normally is passed through during nighttime, or in this case you get a daytime view of the train in area that is serves at night!
