While this may be South on the map on the BNSF all trackage between Chicago and Vancouver/Seattle is considered East to West. While sometimes the tracks may point North or South It is considered East to West.

Thank you, Sam. Please note that I designated this as a "westbound" Z train for the reasons you stated. Once that's done, I have no qualms using actual compass directions for towns, geologic features, etc., such as Finley, WA.
