Guess those rear end ditch lights came in handy, but why were ditch lights added to the rear anyway?

This is the story. When the train left LA it was AMTK 510 leading facing east with the AMTK 509 as the second unit facing west. When they got to Barstow, they went on the Balloon track to have the Platform car (Tioga Pass) as the last car heading west form Kelso. So AMTK 509 (now facing east) will lead the train to Kelso. But, the battery died over night on AMTK 509 so they left AMTK 509 in Barstow. That's why AMTK 510 was leading backwards, or what the engineer said, "NS Style"
