Man this must look completely different. I understand that most if not all this area has been redeveloped and only one small yard exists today.

I visited Charlottesville once. This picture tells me I should have spent more time there.

I grew up in Charlottesville. The ground to the left of the geep slopes up and there was a small parking lot up there. The edge of the lot closest to the white building in the background was a great vantage point to see the power parked on the roundhouse tracks. Dad took me there often on Sundays after church (which was nearby). Also it was just a short stroll from there over to the 9th Street bridge overpass, the vantage point for this photo. Even though I was more of a Southern Ry fan, the C&O provided better train watching in Charlottesville because of the more extensive yard and servicing facilities, and the fact that a local switcher was always on hand. I haven't been back there in about 30 years but I understand that indeed there is very little left of this scene now.
