There is no doubt Conrail squeezed every ounce of life from every locomotive they acquired in 1976. I don't know about the "Conrail water cooler" though (note water bottle on top of the short hood). Placing water bottles on the short hood of Conrail locomotives must have been a common practice, because I have seen many photographs with just such "storage facilities." Nice image Mike.
