The large skate antennas are for BNSF's version of Positive Train Control, called Electronic Train Management System (ETMS). Many of the 4100 series Dash 9s were equipped for testing on the Beardstown Subdivision in Illinois, where the system was first installed. With the coming PTC requirements, expect to see more locomotives with these antennas installed.
