I don't know about in the 80's, but nowadays the reason for putting a passenger car on the rear is that the brakes on a passenger car set-up quicker. If the car is next to the locomotives, the rest of the freight cars will slam into the passenger car. This way, on the rear, it doesn't cause any damage to the passenger car. Nice picture!

I guess the crew wanted something more comfortable then a caboose. Very nice photo!
