Just black...no color or flashy coatings on these ladies. I guess when you need to save money, just make your railroad's paint scheme one color. They still look good no matter how you paint them though!

Yeah, and it was handy that both PRR and NYC already had painted their locomotives black. (Yeah, yeah, I know all about "Brunswick Green"...) In fact, many of the PC paint jobs weren't much more than painting out the old logos and lettering and spraying on the PC stuff. We get nice, flashy paint jobs now because the organic, color pigments have finally caught up to the durable inorganic ones (black, white, "box car red") - for the most part.

Beautiful shot. Really. An E unit side to side to a GG-1. A part I love much watching pictures of trains from '60s to early '80s, I've to say I feel a similar shot very interesting on some reasons. It can seem banal, but it give an idea on different driver accomodation on so different locos. Maybe one can say E unit had no a real excellent in-cab position for the work of the driver ( but I think that was surely better than others more recent models ) but driver working on a GG-1 seemed to have a particularly very reduced view. Two very different aesthetic style... However it is a beautiful shot.
