Unless this train is running backwards, it appears to be moving away from Chicago. This picture was clearly taken from U.D. Tower facing southwest. The locomotive is pointed southbound and the Des Plaines river valley can be seen in the background.

Is the date right? I don't think Amtrak got any GM&O locomotives. Could this be an earlier shot with a GM&O on the old Alton?

Brian, you said "it appears to be moving away from Chicago" because it is. The train is at compass south, but is headed west (check your BNSF Railway system map) and yes the river is in the background where it should be, but the train is not running backwards, it's en route to St Louis
