What's with all of the joints on the siding? It's hard to tell from the photo, but it does not look like the rail itself is broken at all of the joint locations.

Very nice picture of a by-gone era Robert. However, I do have to ask....what's the purpose for all the rail "splice bars" on the track in the foreground?

Thanks for the comments. Regarding the excessive amount of joint bars on the siding, I've read several accounts as to why this was. The most common reason given was that the rails were damaged by the passage of a car with very bad flat spots on its wheels. The locations along the rail where the flat spot hit would then be prone to breakage. The joint bars were added as a preventative measure in case a break did occur. I'm sure there are many other accounts as to why this was, so feel free to share.
