Could someone explain the reson for 'oiling' straight and level track? At first I thought this was a weed spraying train until I saw the caption and the black buildup on the spray car.

It wasn't uncommon to oil the joint bars on lines that carried a fair amount of refrigerated traffic. It kept the brine dripping from the cars from rusting out the joints. Notice the spray head that is pointed down at a 45 degree angle on either side of the railhead.
