Am I the only one who actually finds them somewhat attractive?

Yes, I'm afraid so.

Nikko, I like them too. Not as much as the F40, but they don't look too bad! I think Phase V is a good look for them (and the heritage paint schemes)!

I HAVE TO AGREE with W.D. BUT, adopting ANY of the "Heritage" paint schemes would go a LONG way toward making these units more attractive. The current "Standard" paint scheme does them no favors. Faded, chipped, black PC E-units looked BETTER.

No, I like the industrial styling quite a lot. And I like the paint scheme too. Simple but...well, not elegant, but classy.

Nikko, you're certainly not the only one. Everything about the P40/P42 says power. I happen to think they're quite attractive, and I'd dare say they're beautiful compared to the F59PHi, which is the most hideous passenger locomotive EMD has ever produced. Anyway, nice photo Mr. Shaw.

Count me in as #3....I like 'em as well....and I actually like the "wave" scheme when clean too! Either way a great shot Wayne.

These look great compared with the new GE class 70's. That IS ugly!

The Genesis has always been my favorite diesel and I do believe they are the best looking in-service passenger engines today. The Phase V scheme looks very good on these units, but nothing comes close to the Phase IIIa paint on heritage units 145 and 822. It would be one of the best decisions Amtrak made to paint the entire fleet of locomotives into that scheme.

Count me in for another that likes the P42 styling and the current paint scheme. They both give a sense of speed which you've captured wonderfully in this photo Wayne!

Boy, did I ever pee on a hornet's nest here! I'm sorry but I still refuse to agree with any of the P42 lovers, many of whom I greatly admire. One might even think I should have some brand loyalty here, having worked for GE for 25 years (albeit not in the locomotive division) and they currently pay my pension, as piddling a sum as that may be. Let me explain just why: Firstly I do love the "industrial" look having worked in industry since 1970. Sadly though, there's nothing in the styling of these things that even remotely appears industrial to me. All I see is some lady's shoebox with wheels slapped on it that's been dropped on it's end, and colored by a 3 year-old whose artwork is only appreciated by his trailer-park mom (and apparently a few railfans)! Granted Dave, this Amtrak scheme could be attractive if clean, and on a different backdrop! But I can forgive you, you're seeing similarities in shape with the much-beloved WP&Y shovel-noses, which I still think are ugly (but in a cute sort of way). No, even after having read all of your replies my judgement stands. They are the ugliest mass-produced locomotive ever designed to run on North American rails! As for the overseas stuff, well that's a whole 'nother ball game and one that I won't be buying tickets for any time soon!
