Pembroke was always something of an oddity when it came to the Georgia Central. Adjacent to the old highway, there was a switch tower (now a hair dresser), and a rather wide swath of open land over which the right of way moved through the center. Depending on the maps you check, this looks to have been due to two reasons. First, from sometime in the 1880's, until around 1910 or so, it served as a transfer point between a shortline (unnamed, though there are some likely suspects like the Stillmore Airline), and the Central of Georgia. From that point, until the 30's, it served as a place where cars would be loaded with turpentine, and again sported a rather large yard for this purpose.
