Great look back at early Conrail! The location is actually Elizabeth, NJ on the Chemical Coast Secondary; seems to have been taken off the North Ave. overpass. In the background you can see two large churches in Elizabeth and the Goethals Bridge to Staten Island. The large warehouse at left is still there, too.

The GP9 car body, and lack of a squared-off head-end power lighting box on the long hood on CNJ 1532, is a reminder that it was one of two units rebuilt by EMD after plunging into Newark Bay, off the open vertical lift bridge east of Elizabethport, NJ. As rebuilt, the two were classed as GP7m's, still rated at 1500 h.p.. but devoid of any passenger locomotive accessories.

Always amazed on folks knowledge of locomotives and history. I'm still learning the difference between normal GP7's and GP9's. How do you guys know all this? Great shot.
