On the open cabinet door at the left has a label for MSDS info. MSDS stands for Medical Safety Data Sheets, these are required for all products that are used in the shop. Should an employee come into contact with chemicals or materials that could affect the persons health or safety, the Data Sheets are on hand to provide instructions as to how to resolve the exposure. These Data Sheets also detail how to safely use each product and what personal protective equipment should be required when using the products, as well as what to do in case of a spill or fire, etc. These Sheets are required by Occupational Safety and Health Regulations and are provided by the manufacturer of the specific product, free of charge. All employers have an Standard Industrial Classification Code Number. There is actually a code number for Museums, and non-paid members who use the possibly hazardous chemicals or materials are considered to be exposed employees. If the railroad ordered a product to dump into the water tender to treat the water going to the boiler, the first order would come with an MSDS supplied to be kept on file, and the MSDS would be kept filed in the cabinet.
