Seriously terrific shot El Rocco on El Cajon! I really like the B&W, the super elevation, and most of all, the water treatment dirt on the rear boiler so characteristic of UP steam back in the day. Normally I prefer, as I am UP steam crew does also, 844 nice n' shiny. But here in the desert having the pretty UP lady a little mussed up is smile inducing.

Thank you Dennis for your comment. I shot this image in a color format, but was unimpressed with the look of the finished picture. After ruminating on the subject for about a week, I decided process the image as a black and white image, and attempt to make the picture look as close to the 1950’s as possible, Moreover, I was unaware of the cause of the white film on the boiler when 844 came into West Colton, but during it’s stay at the yard, I had the opportunity to inquire as to its origin and was advised that it was essentially “hard water deposits.” While I am more familiar with the operation of AT&SF 3751 and had not seen this effect on said engine, it is perhaps due to the fact that 3751 has not traveled as far as 844, and therefore has not had a chance to build up these deposits. So I guess we will see what happens to 3751 when she takes off to the Grand Canyon this Summer.
