Please note that the air horns on these locomotives are protected by steel structures that can break any icicles that may be hanging from tunnel portals. Thanks for your historic posting James.

Wow....what a lot of color for Helper. Green grass and a red nose. So out of place Jim.

Awesome shot. Great framing, great perspective, and the colors especially. Wish they still ran those SDP40F's. Those were some handsome pieces of machinery.

I was on that train. A friend and I boarded at Oakland, bound for Fort Wayne, Indiana via Chicago. We had gotten about 25 miles past Ogden when the railroad stopped us and let us sit for a while before backing us down to Ogden and sending us to Salt Lake City and D&RGW. Those locomotives had a bad reputation for track damage, and D&RGW hesitated about even accepting them. Finally they restricted them to 40mph maximum and freight train speed in the canyons. We were 14 hours late into Chicago and missed our connection with the Broadway. Amtrak gave us vouchers for a hotel, meals, and cab fare, and we had a sunny day to enjoy Chicago before continuing our journey. You wouldn't happen to be one of the two kids who chased us with cameras for quite a few miles, would you?
