But... they painted over the silver smoke box. Maybe graphite was better then silver but the hunter green smoke box just seems off. 'Course, that she's any color other then black... but in her proposed role as a luxury passenger carrier, seems at least plausible.

Why is it not operational? Ross spent millions of dollars over the years to keep it running and enjoyed by millions of people. I understand she needs totally rebuilt, but that's been done before. It will be a shame to let a great piece of history sit idle and deteriorate further. Sell her to Steamtown. They will keep her running on the rails. Return 614 to the rails where she belongs.

I agree that she should return to the high iron soon, but not by selling her to Steamtown. They already are down to 1 steam engine (CN 3254) and have two their currently working on (one of which since 1994) and CP 2317 waiting for an inspection. According to an employee, after Baldwin 26 & B&M 3713 are done, NKP 759 is next. I want to see her run, but Steamtown has too much on their hands as is.

Where there's a will, there's a way, but someone would have to leave A LOT of money to get things rolling again! In all seriousness, the intention was (is) to eventually see #614 back in action pulling a luxury passenger train from Washington D.C. to the Greenbriar resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV. It's only a matter of dollars and permission to run on CSX trackage.

Ah, yes. The British build a brand new steam loco, while we have trouble keeping what we already have from rusting away. It's not just locomotives, either. The historic cruiser "Olympia" is far from safe, for example. Guess we will have to settle for models of classics like the NYC Hudsons.
